Permelia Pease Etheridge (1836 to 1912) was from Rose. July 17 when she married, she and her new husband Josiah were "Standalones", an obscure religious sect whose primary belief was that, in the end, everyone 'stood alone' before God. The derogatory 'Neversweat' term came about because, of these people, it was said that "They could work all day, and pray all night and never sweat a drop!" Around the time we meet Permelia, the Standalones disappeared from Rose, New York. They all headed west to found the town of Wild Rose, Wisconsin, where they continued to practice their 'unique' brand of Christianity for nearly another century.
